Lyrics
(C7)Oh! They say some (B7)people (Bb7)long ago were searching (Ab7)for a diff'rent (G7)tune,
(Ab7)one that they could (G7)croon as (Ab7)only (G7)they (C)can.
They (A7)only (Eb6)had the (G7)rhythm, (C7)so they started (B7)swaying (Bb7)to and fro.
They didn't (Ab7)know just what to (G7)use,
(Ab7)that is how the (G7)blues (Ab7)really (G7)(C)began.
(A7)They (Ab7)heard (G7)the (C)breeze in the (G7)trees (Gaug)singing weird (E7)melodies (D7)and they made that the start of the (C)blues.
(A7)And (Ab7)from (G7)a (C)jail came a wail of (Gaug)a (E7)downhearted frail,
(D7)and they played that as part of the (C)blues.
From a (E7)whippoorwill (Bm7)out on a (E7)hill,
(Bm7)they took a (E7)new note, pushed it through a (A7)horn 'til it was worn into a blue (D7)note!
(Am7)And (Ab7)then (G7)they (C)nursed it, rehearsed it,
(Gaug)and gave (E7)out the news (D7)that the Southland gave birth to the (C)blues!
They (Ab7)heard (G7)the (C)breeze in the (G7)trees (Gaug)singing weird (E7)melodies (D7)and they made that the start of the (C)blues.
