Goofus

(F13)I was born on a farm out in Ioway.

A (Bb6)flaming youth, I was bound I would fly away.

I (F13)packed my grip and I grabbed my saxophone.

(F13)Can't read notes, but I play anything by ear.

I (Bb6)made up tunes on the sounds that I used to hear.

When (G7)I'd start to play,

(C7)folks used to say, "Sounds a little Goofus to (Bb6)me."

Cornfed chords appeal to me.

(A6)I like rustic harmony.

(Ab6)Hold a note and change the key.

(Dm7)Hey, but that's (Cm7)(F)"Goofus."

(Bb6)Not according to the rules (A6)that you learn in music schools,

(Ab6)but the folks just dance like fools.

(Dm7)They sure (G7)go for (Cm7)(F)"Goofus."

Got a job, but I just couldn't keep it long.

The (Bb)leader said that I played all the music wrong.

So (F)I stepped out with an outfit of my own.

(F6)Got together a new kind of orchestree and (Bb)we all played just the same "Goofus" harmony.

And (G7)I must admit

(C7)we made a hit.

"Goofus" has been lucky for (Bb6)me.

(G6)Got together a new kind of orchestree and (C6)we all played just the same "Goofus" harmony.

And (A7)I must admit

(D7)we made a hit.

(G13)"Goofus" has been lucky for (C)me.

(G13)"Goofus" has been lucky for (C)me.

(G13)"Goofus" has been lucky

for me.
