Town Meeting Song

There were (Bm)objects so peculiar they were not to be believed.

All around, things to tantalize my (C)brain.

It's a (Bm)world (Gdim7)unlike (G#dim)anything I've ever (F#7)seen,

and as (Bm)hard as I (C)try I (F#7)can't seem to (G)describe.

Like a (Bm)most (F#7)improbable (Bm)dream.

But you (F#7)must (G)believe when I (C)tell you (G#dim7)this,

it's as (Bm)real as my (A#dim)skull,

and it (G#dim7)does (Fdim7)(F#)exist.

(Bm)This is a thing called a "present."

The whole thing starts with a (C)box.

A box?

(F#)Is it (Gdim7)steel?

Are there (F#)locks?

Is it (Gdim7)filled with a (F#)pox?

A pox!

How delightful, a pox!

Just a (Bm)box with bright colored paper,

and the whole thing's (B7)topped with a (Em)bow.

A (F#7)bow?

But (Gdim7)why?

How (F#7)ugly!

What's (Gdim7)in it?

What's (F#7)in it?

That's the point of the (F#)thing,

not to know!

It's a (Em)bat.

Will it bend?

It's a rat.

Will it (C#dim7)break?

(Cdim7)Perhaps it's the (Em)head that I (B7)found in the (Em)lake!

(B7)Listen now, (Em)you don't (B7)(Em)understand.

(Am)That's not the (Em)point of (B7)(Em)Christmasland.

(Cm6)We (Cm)pick up an oversized sock and hang it like this on the (Db)wall.

Oh, (G)yes!

Does it (Abdim7)still have a (G)foot?

Let me (Abdim7)see!

Let me (G)look!

Is it rotted and covered with gook?

There's no (Cm)foot inside, but there's candy.

Or sometimes it's (C7)filled with small (Fm)toys.
