The Sound Of Silence

Hello darkness, my old (Dm)friend, (C)I've come to talk to you (Dm)again,

because a vision softly (Bb)(F)creeping,

left its seeds while I was (Bb)(F)sleeping.

And the (Bb)vision that was planted in my (F)brain still (Dm)remains (F)within the (C)sound of (Dm)silence.

In restless dreams I walked (C)alone;

ten narrow streets of (Dm)cobblestone,

'neath the halo of a (F)street lamp,

I turned my collar to the cold and damp,

when my (Bb)eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon (F)light that split the (Dm)night (F)and touched the (C)sound of (Dm)si lence.

And in the naked light I (C)saw ten thousand people,

maybe (Dm)more.

People talking without (F)speaking, I people hearing without listening,

people (Bb)writing songs by that voices a never (F)share,

and no one (Dm)dare (F)disturb the (C)sound of (Dm)si lence.

"Fools!" said I, "You do not (C)know silence like a cancer (Dm)grows.

Hear my words that I might (F)teach you.

Take my arms that I might reach you."

But my (Bb)words like silent raindrops (F)fell,

(Dm)and (F)echoed in the (C)wells of (Dm)silence.

And the people bowed and (C)prayed to the neon god they (Dm)made.

And the sign flashed out its (Bb)(F)warning in the words that it was (Bb)(F)forming.

And the sign said, the (Bb)words of the prophets are (C)written on the subway (F)walls and tenement (Dm)halls,

and (F)whisper'd in the (C)sounds of (Dm)si lence,

(C)and (F)whisper'd in the (C)sounds of si lence.
