The Sound of Silence

Hello, darkness, my old friend.

I've come to talk with you again.

Because a vision, softly (D)creeping,

left its seeds while I was (A)sleeping.

And the (D)vision (E)that was (D)planted in my brain still (F#m)remains within the (Esus)sound (E)of (F#m)silence.

In restless dreams I walked (E)alone,

narrow streets of (F#m)cobblestone.

'Neath the halo (A)of a (D)streetlamp,

I turned my collar to the cold and damp when my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light that split the (F#m)night (Esus)and touched the (E)sound of (F#m)silence.

And in the naked light, I (Esus)saw ten thousand (E)people,

maybe (F#m)more.

People talking (A)without (D)speaking,

people hearing (A)without (Bm)list'ning, people writing songs that voices never shared;

and no one dared

(E)disturb the (Esus)sound (E)of (F#m)silence.

(Gmaj7)"Fools," said I, "you do not (A)know:

silence, like a (F#m7)cancer, (Bm)grows.

Hear my (D)words, that I (G)might teach you.

(D)Take my arms, that I (G)might reach you."

But my words, like silent raindrops,

fell

(Bm)and echoed in the (A)wells of (Bm)silence.

And the people bowed and (A)prayed to the neon god (Bm)they made.

And the (Bm7)sign flashed (D)out (G)its warning,

and the words that it (G)was forming.

And the sign said:

The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and (A)tenement halls,

and whispered in the sound of silence.
