I Remember

I (Ab)awake on a chilly Christmas (Abmaj7)morning,

watch the (Db)choir singing carols on TV.

I gaze (Fm)out through my (Fm(maj7))window at a (Fm7)dozen other windows,

then I (Dm7)plug in my artificial (Gsus4)tree.

(G)And like a (Cm7)dream, I begin to (F13)remember ev'ry (Fm7)Christmas I used to know,

(Eb)a thousand miles (Fm)away,

(Eb)a million years (Am7)ago.

(Gm9)I remember (Cm9)sky,

(F7sus4)it was (Fm7)blue (F7)as (Bbdim7)ink.

(Bb)Or at (Dm)least I (Gm9)think

(Cm9)I remember (F9)sky.

(Gm9)I remember (Cm9)snow,

(F7sus4)soft as feathers,

(Fm7)sharp as thumbtacks,

(F7)coming down like (Bbdim7)lint.

(Bb)And it made (Dm)you (Gm9)squint

(Cm9)when the wind would (F7)blow.

And ice, like vinyl, on the streets,

(Fm)cold as silver, white as sheets.

(Ebmaj9)Rain like strings and (D)changing things,

like (Gm9)leaves.

I remember (Cm9)leaves,

(F7sus4)green as (Fm7)(F7)spearmint,

(Fm7)crisp as (F7)paper.

(Gm9)I remember (Cm9)trees,

(F7sus4)bare as (Fm7)coat (F7)racks,

(F7sus4)spread like (F7)broken umbrellas.

And parks, and bridges, ponds, and zoos.

(Fm7)Ruddy faces, muddy shoes.

(Db)Light and noise and bees and boys and (F7sus4)days.

(F7)Oh, (Bbmaj7)I remember (Gm6)days,

(F7sus4)or at (F7)least I (Bb)try.

(Bb)But as years go (Eb6/9)by,

(Cm9)they're a sort of (F7)haze.

(Gm9)And the bluest (Cm9)ink

(Fm7)isn't (F7)really (Bbdim7)sky.

(Bb)And at times (Dm)I (Gm9)think

(Eb6)I would gladly (Cm7)die

for a day of (Bb)sky.
