Allentown

Well, we're (Em7)living here in (A)Allentown,

and they're (Am7)closing all the (D)factories down.

Out in (Em7)Bethlehem they're (A)killing time,

(F#m)filling out (Em)forms,

(D)standing in line.

(A)Well, the (Em7)fathers fought the (A)Second World War,

spent their (Am7)weekends on the (D)Jersey shore,

(G)all. met our (Em7)mothers in the (A)U S O,

(F#m)asked them to dance,

(D)and danced with them slow.

(A)And we're (Em7)living here in (A)Allentown,

but the (F)restlessness was (G)handed the down and it's (Am7)getting very (D)hard to stay.

(G)Well, we're (Em7)waiting here in (A)Allentown for the (Am7)Pennsylvania (D)we never found,

for the (Em7)promises our (A)teachers gave (F#m)if we worked hard,

(D)if we behaved.

(A)So the (Em7)graduations (A)hang on the wall,

but they (Am7)never really (D)helped us at (G)all.

No they (Em7)never taught us (A)what was real,

(F#m)iron and coke,

(D)and chromium steel.

(A)And we're (Em7)waiting here in (A)Allentown,

but they've (F)taken all the (G)coal from the ground and the (Am7)union people (D)crawled away.

(D)Ev'ry child (G)had a (F)pretty good shot

to get at least (G)as far as their (Bb)old man got,

(F)but something happened on (G)the way (F)to that place.

They threw an (G)American flag (C)in our face.

(G)Well, I'm (Em7)living here in (A)Allentown and it's (F)hard to keep a (G)good man down,

but I (Am7)won't be getting (D)up today.

(C)And it's getting very (Em)hard (D)to (Em)stay,

and we're living here in (D)Allentown.
